The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), has announced plans to deploy NDLEA personnel to all 774 local government areas across the country by 2024. This strategic move aims to intensify the fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking, particularly in local communities.
Marwa made this announcement while responding to a request from Dr. Dikko Umaru Radda, the Governor of Katsina State, who sought additional NDLEA officers and cooperation to address drug abuse and insecurity in the state.
With the NDLEA’s staff strength expected to reach 15,000 by the end of the year, the agency is gearing up to extend its operations to the local government areas (LGAs) for more effective performance evaluation and advocacy work. This expansion is part of the NDLEA’s commitment to addressing the challenges posed by drug abuse and its role in fueling insecurity.
Marwa expressed his appreciation for Governor Radda’s efforts to tackle various challenges and promote the socio-economic development of the state. He emphasized the significance of addressing the drug menace, which has a profound impact on the lives of youth and communities. He recognized the role of drug abuse in criminal activities and highlighted the NDLEA’s efforts in operation “offensive action” to seize illicit substances and arrest perpetrators.
The fight against drug abuse includes the drug supply reduction aspect, which focuses on arresting individuals involved in drug-related activities. Over 6,668 tons of illicit substances have been seized in the past two years, with over 36,096 suspects arrested and more than 6,043 prosecuted and convicted during this period.
The NDLEA’s efforts also encompass drug demand reduction, which emphasizes prevention, treatment, and aftercare for drug-dependent individuals. Advocacy and sensitization are used to target those who have not yet started or are at risk of starting drug use.
Governor Radda stated that he visited the NDLEA as part of the state government’s commitment to addressing insecurity, which has been a major issue in Katsina State. He acknowledged the role of drug abuse among the youth in exacerbating insecurity and appealed for enhanced cooperation and support from the NDLEA to curb the movement of drugs, arrest drug dealers, and reduce drug abuse and trafficking in the state. This partnership is expected to contribute to reducing insecurity and improving the state’s economy.

In a statement signed by his media aide, Mumuni argued that the First Lady’s comments were misinterpreted. He explained that her intention was to promote economic self-sufficiency by highlighting low-capital business opportunities that can provide immediate income for low-income households. He emphasized that with modest start-up capital—such as ₦50,000 to ₦100,000—many Nigerians could achieve financial stability.
Mumuni further clarified that the government remains committed to supporting all levels of enterprise, citing various federal initiatives and grants as proof. He urged critics to focus their energy on addressing substantive national issues like insecurity and hunger rather than directing “misplaced anger” at the First Lady’s encouragement of entrepreneurship.

He noted that even a small amount of capital could help families generate a sustainable income.
He also pointed out that the government is already supporting larger businesses through various grants and loan programs. Mumuni concluded by calling for an end to what he termed “misplaced anger,” suggesting that Nigerians should prioritize tackling major national challenges like poverty and insecurity instead of focusing on controversial interpretations of the First Lady’s advice.
