The House of Representatives has taken steps to address public criticism surrounding its continually growing number of standing committees, which have now reached 134, despite ongoing economic challenges in the country.
Appointed by Speaker Rep. Tajudeen Abbas in June, these 134 committees were entrusted with managing the affairs of the 10th House of Representatives.
In response to concerns, Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Rep. Akin Rotimi, defended the house’s actions during a discussion with the House of Reps Press Corps in Abuja.
Rotimi acknowledged worries about the potential duplication of functions among the committees but emphasized that the 10th assembly’s approach differed from previous ones.
Under former Speaker Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, the ninth assembly had 109 standing committees, and former Speaker Yakubu Dogara established 96 such committees in the eighth assembly. In the seventh assembly, there were 89.
However, during the 10th assembly under Speaker Abbas, the number of standing committees had surged to 134.
Some Nigerians have expressed concerns about what they perceive as an excessive number of committees, particularly in light of President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to reducing the cost of governance, especially amid rising fuel prices and associated economic challenges.
Rotimi, who also serves as the house’s spokesperson, stressed that the speaker’s decision to establish 134 standing committees was well-considered. He further pledged to maintain the house’s weekly press briefings with parliamentary reporters, underscoring the importance of transparency in the leadership of the 10th assembly.
Additionally, Rotimi highlighted the legislative achievements of the house, including the processing of bills and motions, with over 300 motions considered and approximately 1,800 bills at various stages of progress.
