The federal government has initiated measures to broaden the scope of the school feeding program, with the goal of including children in military schools, para-military schools, out-of-school children, and children in emergency situations, ultimately achieving universal coverage by 2025.
The “Renewed Hope National Home Grown School Feeding and End Hunger Programme (RH-NHGSFEHP)” by the federal government is currently providing meals to more than 53,000 schools and 9.9 million pupils in 35 States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Anjor Obande, the National Program Manager of RH-NHGSFEHP, shared this information during the launch of the School Feeding Program-Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition’s (GAIN) ENSAND project in Abuja. She affirmed the unwavering support of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, and the National Coordinator of the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA), Halima Shehu, for the partnership with GAIN.
According to Obande, the Minister and the NSIPA boss have prioritized the National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, and the introduction of the GAIN ENSAND Project aims to enhance and expand the program’s beneficiaries.
She stated, “Under the auspices of NSIPA, with the support of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, we, at the RH-NHGSFEHP, will continue to work towards our respective yet shared objectives.”
Obande emphasized that Home-Grown School Meals, through coordinated efforts and partnerships, have the potential to significantly contribute to improving food and nutrition security in households and communities across the country.
The administration of President Bola Tinubu is committed to restructuring the program in alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda, with the aim of eradicating poverty, reducing the number of out-of-school children, and eliminating malnutrition among school-age children.
Recently, at the School Meals Coalition Ministerial Meeting, they pledged to expand the program’s coverage to encompass children in military schools, para-military schools, out-of-school children, and children in emergency situations, with the target of achieving universal coverage by 2025.
Obande also revealed that the RH-NHGSFEHP is in the process of establishing a School Meals Basket Fund in accordance with the NHGSFP Policy approved in May 2023.
She called on both domestic and international stakeholders and partners to collaborate in ensuring the successful establishment of the School Meals Basket Fund. This, she emphasized, would be a substantial investment in the future of Nigerian children and would contribute to expanding the program’s beneficiaries while aligning with the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
