Nigerians React As Supreme Court Criticizes Atiku And Peter Obi For Preemptive Conclusions And Media Trials In Election Petition Appeal....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Supreme Court, in a ruling on Thursday, admonished Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) for prematurely reaching conclusions and engaging in media trials before court rulings. Presiding Justice John Okoro, part of the seven-member panel, rejected the argument made by Atiku and the PDP that the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) used disparaging language against them.
Justice Okoro clarified that the tribunal did not employ disparaging language in its judgment to display hostility or bias against the appellants, thereby upholding their right to a fair hearing.
He stated, “I have reviewed the lower court’s judgment and the context in which those words were used, and it is my opinion that they were not intended to belittle the appellants or their legal representatives.”
Justice Okoro emphasized the importance of litigants trusting the court when their cases are under consideration, discouraging litigants from conducting press conferences, analyzing cases, and drawing conclusions while matters are still in court. He also cautioned against followers sending threatening messages to judges and justices, as matters in court should be treated as sub judice.
He concluded, “Legal representatives should refrain from media trials and delivering judgments through media. There is no need to elaborate further. A word to the wise is sufficient. This matter offers no positive contribution to the appellants.” He further declared, “In my opinion, this appeal lacks merit and is hereby dismissed.”
