Nigerian Women In Media Urged To Support Each Other For Inclusive Reporting On Their Skills And Abilities....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Women working in the media industry in Nigeria have received advice to collaborate in promoting initiatives that highlight their talents and capabilities within the country.

Dr. Valda Itunu Martins, a lecturer at the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, delivered this counsel during a presentation at the Niger Women in the Media Summit, held at the IBB Pen House in Minna. Her paper, titled “The Role of the Media in Promoting Gender Mainstreaming,” addressed the issue of bias in some media organizations, particularly in terms of fostering mutual understanding between the male and female genders.

She expressed, “It is time for women to begin supporting one another and persist despite the obstacles we face. Let us also aim to be role models for emerging professionals. The current global situation has demonstrated that women have proven their capabilities in playing complementary roles and should, therefore, be given opportunities to contribute to the growth and development of the country.”

The event’s convener, Ms. Justina Asishana, explained that the summit, themed “Empowering Women Journalists for Inclusive Reporting and Leadership,” aimed to inspire women journalists to aspire to greater heights and address the challenges they encounter in their professional roles.

She noted, “The media industry, like many others, has historically been dominated by men, with limited avenues for women to showcase their talents and capabilities. This summit seeks to rectify this disparity and establish an empowering environment for women journalists to thrive.

“Furthermore, there is a clear gap in mainstreaming gender in the media. Our stories, perspectives, and experiences often find themselves marginalized. It is high time we change this narrative by ensuring that gender is not merely a category but an integral aspect of every story. We can create a more balanced and representative media landscape.”

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.
