In an impressive ceremony held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Hall in the Force Headquarters, Abuja, the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, bestowed new ranks upon 12 Assistant Inspectors General of Police and 19 Commissioners of Police on Thursday. This significant event was prompted by the approval from the Police Service Commission, recognizing the dedication and hard work of these officers and 5,687 other senior officers within the Nigeria Police Force.

The newly promoted Assistant Inspectors General of Police include Ogundele Ayodeji, Patrick Edung, Badru Lawal, Bartholomew Onyeka, Suleiman Yusuf, Idowu Owohunwa, Rhoda Olofu, Godwin Aghaulor, Effiom Ekot, Stanley Ude, Longe Patrick, and Ndu Anene, who were formerly Commissioners of Police.

The event witnessed the presence of notable dignitaries, including Governors from Abia, Akwa Ibom, Edo, Kogi, and Lagos States, Dame Patience Ebele Jonathan, retired Inspector General Usman Baba, the Senator representing Kogi Central, royal figures from Kogi and Lagos States, members of the Force Management Team, senior police officers, family members, and well-wishers.

The official statement, as relayed by the Force spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, highlighted the Inspector-General of Police’s call for the promoted officers to uphold the core values of service, sacrifice, and selflessness in the execution of their duties. He commended their unwavering dedication and hard work, recognizing that their new ranks signify increased responsibilities and trust in their ability to lead by example.

The Inspector-General of Police conveyed his congratulations to the promoted officers, urging them to redouble their efforts in serving the nation. He also expressed appreciation to the Police Service Commission for their rigorous and objective evaluation of the officers’ performances and pledged to foster improved collaboration to enhance excellence and maintain the NPF’s commitment to serving and safeguarding the people of Nigeria.

On Friday evening, the Isan Police Station in the Oye Local Government Area of Ekiti State was targeted by suspected gunmen who set the facility ablaze, leaving two officers wounded. The attackers destroyed several vehicles, notably a long bus that had been chartered by police personnel from Abuja. While it was reported that officers initially stationed at the facility fled during the onset of the attack, reinforcements from the Police Mobile Force intervened while traveling from Oye to Isan, successfully repelling the gunmen and preventing them from seizing control of the community. Security forces have since restored order to the area.

A survey of the aftermath reveals significant destruction to the police station, including damaged doors, windows, and ceilings, as well as the loss of a generator and other equipment. In total, five vehicles were destroyed—two located within the station premises and three outside. While this incident marks another in a series of attacks on police infrastructure within the state, the Ekiti State Police Command has not yet released an official statement regarding the situation.
