The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal has affirmed Aminu Tambuwal’s election as the Senator for Sokoto South Senatorial District. Tambuwal, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a former two-term governor of Sokoto State, secured the victory with 100,860 votes, defeating his closest rival, Abdullahi Danbaba of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who received 95,884 votes.
Challenging the election result, Danbaba filed a petition, seeking to have the Tribunal declare the election inconclusive due to non-compliance with the Electoral Act. He also requested a re-election in 28 polling units where he alleged that the election did not take place during both the February and April polls.
In a unanimous decision, the three-member Tribunal panel, led by Justice Denis Madi Echesi, dismissed Danbaba’s petition, citing its lack of merit and unreliable evidence. The Tribunal also ordered that N200,000 in costs be awarded to both the PDP and Tambuwal, the first and second respondents, respectively.
Barrister Chris Kelechi, a member of Danbaba’s legal team, stated that they would carefully review the Tribunal’s judgment before considering an appeal. Suleiman Usman (SAN), representing Senator Tambuwal, praised the judgment, noting that some of the evidence presented by the petitioner was contradictory and ultimately unproven. The Tribunal thereby confirmed Tambuwal as the duly elected Senator for Sokoto South Senatorial District.
