Amos Yohanna of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been inaugurated as the Senator representing Adamawa North Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate. Yohanna assumes the position after Senator Elisha Abbo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was recently removed from the Senate by the Appeal Court, according to reports by Naija News.
During the swearing-in ceremony held in the Senate, the oath of office and oath of allegiance were administered to Yohanna by the Senate’s Clerk, Chinedu Akubueze, following the directive of the Deputy President of the Senate, Jibrin Barau, who presided over the session.
Notably, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Senator Abbo as the victor on February 27, 2023, with 71,927 votes, defeating Yohanna of the PDP, who secured 61,895 votes. Discontented with the election’s outcome, the PDP and Yohanna took their case to the tribunal, challenging Abbo and INEC and citing corrupt practices and non-compliance with the Electoral Act 2022 as reasons for the election’s invalidity.
Yohanna’s petition, identified as EPT/AD/SEN/02/2023, alleged irregularities such as overvoting, false entries, alterations, and vote cancellations at several polling units. However, the tribunal dismissed the petition and ordered Yohanna to pay N600,000 in damages to Abbo. Unsatisfied with this decision, Yohanna pursued the case to the Court of Appeal, which ultimately ruled in his favor.
