Lance Corporal Philomena Nnamoko, a 39-year-old female soldier currently stationed at Ilese Barracks in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, has made a heartfelt plea, expressing her intense emotional distress and imploring the Nigerian Army to grant her an honorable discharge.
Nnamoko, in her candid interview with PUNCH, revealed that she believes she is grappling with psychological imbalances and is on the verge of losing her mental stability. She has expressed her desire to leave the military service.
In a desperate attempt to be relieved from her duties, Nnamoko disclosed that she has submitted more than ten written requests to the relevant authorities, seeking voluntary discharge. However, no action has been taken on her case thus far.
She voiced her anguish, stating, “I am gradually losing my mind, I am psychologically imbalanced, and people are saying they want to book me for AWOL. I cannot go through that torture again. I want to leave the service. The pain is too much. I want to be discharged from this job.

Nnamoko highlighted the last letter she composed, dated December 11, 2022, and the subsequent discharges that took place on July 28, 2023, where her name was conspicuously absent. She expressed her bewilderment, stating, “Even those who had just written theirs and submitted it in January and February were discharged. I have written more than ten letters to the Army asking for a voluntary discharge, but I have not been considered. I don’t know what I have done.”
Her legal representative, Kayode Oshiyemi, emphasized the emotional turmoil his client is enduring. He expressed deep concern regarding the mysterious delay in her release from the Nigerian Army, asserting that Nnamoko is eager to exit the service and has been consistently seeking assistance. Oshiyemi pleaded for her prompt discharge, stating, “Let them let her go, she wants to leave the service. She comes to my office crying every day. Please, let the Army discharge her freely, she wants out.”
In response to the situation, Brig. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, emphasized that the Nigerian Army operates according to specific terms and conditions related to discharges. He clarified that once a soldier meets the stipulated criteria for discharge or retirement, it will be duly approved.
Furthermore, Major Olaniyi Osoba, the spokesperson for the 81 Division, Nigerian Army, expressed a willingness to listen to Nnamoko’s concerns, indicating that he is interested in hearing directly from her.
