Philip Agbese, the Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, has voiced his dissatisfaction with the performance of the new leader of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Agbese conveyed his concerns during a courtesy visit from former Minister of Agriculture and elder statesman, Audu Ogbeh.
The lawmaker argued that the present leadership of the apex bank does not exhibit significant differences from the previous one under Godwin Emefiele’s guidance. Notably, on Monday, the official market exchange rate witnessed the naira plummeting to N1,200 per dollar.
In response to this situation, Agbese asserted that the surge in the dollar exchange rate is indicative of the new CBN leadership’s “incompetence.” He elaborated, “The recent rise in the dollar’s exchange rate clearly indicates that the new CBN leadership made erroneous decisions right from the outset.
“The significant devaluation of the Naira in the unofficial market has been exacerbated by the removal of currency restrictions in the official market, which had previously provided support to the Naira’s value.
“The decision to lift the ban on the importation of certain items, especially at a time when our imports are already high, and local businesses are grappling with survival, suggests that we are currently facing a challenging period.
“One would anticipate the CBN to expand the list of items affected by the ban, thus stimulating local production for domestic consumption and positively influencing the economy.
“The escalating dollar exchange rate is a clear reflection of the situation. This implies that individuals who used to turn to the parallel market for dollars are now turning to the government to meet their demands.”
