Magistrate Mcdavies Amore, presiding over the Environmental Special Offences Court of the Lagos State District, has issued a verdict committing 26 individuals to community service due to their involvement in haphazard waste disposal in various locations across the state. In lieu of community service, these offenders also have the option to pay a N30,000 fine.
The arrest of these individuals was carried out by the enforcement team of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC). They were apprehended between 9.30 pm and 7 pm while they were indiscriminately disposing of their refuse.
Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director of LAWMA, emphasized that the joint enforcement effort has been heightened in alignment with the government’s unwavering stance against careless waste disposal. He asserted, “The era of recklessness and disregard for the environment is over. Anyone caught, no matter the circumstances, will face legal consequences. This enforcement is an ongoing initiative.”
Gbadegesin urged residents to actively support initiatives aimed at maintaining environmental hygiene by refraining from irresponsible waste disposal, ensuring they have waste receptacles at home, and engaging accredited Private Sector Participants (PSP) for waste collection. He cautioned that defaulters would find no refuge from the law.
It is worth noting that a Magistrates Court in Oshodi recently imposed fines and community service sentences on 29 individuals for their involvement in indiscriminate waste disposal.
