The Principal of Federal Government College Maiduguri, Malam Umar Habeeb Jibril, has revealed that the recent increase in school fees for unity colleges in Nigeria has adversely affected students’ enrollment prospects. Despite the college having a 200-student admission capacity in the last admission session, only two out of the 89 admitted students registered due to the fee hike.
The Federal Ministry of Education issued a directive raising the school fees for new students enrolling in Federal Government Colleges to N100,000, a significant increase from the previous N45,000. The directive was communicated in a circular dated May 25, 2023.
Malam Jibril shared this concerning enrollment during the 50th-anniversary celebration of the college in Maiduguri, Borno State. He commended the Old Students Association for their dedication to the college’s progress and development through various projects.
Additionally, Hon Asabe Vilita Bashir, an alumnus of the Federal Government College, Maiduguri, expressed concerns about insecurity and the high cost of living affecting the exchange program of unity colleges. She noted that parents are less inclined to send their children to study in distant places, unlike in the past when people were more willing to apply to schools outside their home states.
During the event, former Minister of Information, Mr. Frank Nweke Junior, urged the federal government to focus on revitalizing unity colleges, which have produced prominent Nigerians and fostered national unity through exchange programs.
The Federal Government College Maiduguri Old Students’ Association (FEGOCOMOSA), in partnership with the Borno State government, pledged to sponsor 69 indigent students with scholarships to the school. Prominent individuals, including Suleiman Muhammed Dikwa, former President of the Old Students Association, and Hon Asabe Vilita Bashir, made commitments to support these students.
