The Federal government, in partnership with the Benue State government, has initiated the process of rehabilitating, reconstructing, and resettling Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Kwande and Logo local government areas.

Chidimma Makuachukwu, representing the Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and serving as the National Programme Manager for Renewed Hope Shelter for the Poor, Refugees, and IDPs, made this announcement during a visit to community chiefs in the affected areas to identify suitable locations for providing shelter to the displaced individuals.

Makuachukwu emphasized that President Bola Tinubu is deeply concerned about the welfare of IDPs, with shelter provision being the initial step among various measures introduced by his administration to aid these individuals. She explained that the primary focus is on constructing homes for the displaced within secure environments where access to educational, medical, electricity, and market facilities will be easier.

Additionally, traditional rulers, including the Mue Ter Ichôngo of the Kwande Area Traditional Council and the Mue Ter Ipusu of the Logo Area Traditional Council, expressed their support for the resettlement plan during the visit.

According to the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Tersoo Kula, the traditional rulers from both Kwande and Logo communities have generously donated land for the construction of shelters for the IDPs. They commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for taking action to fulfill his campaign promise of resettling the displaced persons affected by attacks from armed cattle owners.

Chidimma conveyed her gratitude to Governor Alia for recognizing the necessity of resettling the IDPs and thanked the chiefs for their land allocations for the project. She assured that the actual construction work at the designated sites will soon commence.

Furthermore, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Sir James Iorapuu, revealed that his agency, in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has initiated the biometric verification of IDPs to facilitate the allocation of homes.
