The Benue State Police Command has officially verified the unfortunate demise of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Otukpo Police Division, CSP John Adikwu, along with three other officers. This tragic event transpired as the four officers sustained grievous injuries while confronting an armed robber gang during a brazen daylight heist targeting five commercial banks in Otukpo local government area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Catherine Anene, has stated that while the exact number of civilian casualties is yet to be officially confirmed, it is believed to be around four, raising the total number of casualties to eight.
Anene disclosed that the armed robbers were subsequently intercepted along the Otukpo-Taraku Road after engaging in a fierce gunfight with the police officers, leading to the death of two of the criminals. The remaining gang members abandoned their vehicles and fled into the forest area.
Despite the challenges faced during the bank robberies, Anene assured that the police are actively pursuing the armed robbers.
She provided details of the incident: “On 20/10/2023 at about 1615hrs, armed robbers invaded Access, First, Zenith, UBA, and Stanbic Banks in Otukpo simultaneously.”
CSP Adikwu, the Otukpo Divisional Police Officer, and other police teams in the vicinity engaged the robbers in a fierce gun battle, although they were unable to prevent the bank attacks. Unfortunately, the DPO sustained gunshot wounds to his stomach, and three other police officers lost their lives in this tragic incident.
Anene also informed that individuals injured during the bank robberies have been transported to the hospital for medical treatment.
In response to the crisis, additional police teams, in collaboration with other security agencies, have been dispatched to Otukpo to aid in restoring stability and preventing the robbers from escaping. An investigation is currently underway to unravel the circumstances surrounding the invasion.
The Benue State Police spokesperson described DPO Adikwu as a highly experienced police officer who had been recently transferred to Otukpo just a few months ago.

Case Background and Prosecution
The convicts were apprehended following a violent cult clash at the Ikenne Town Hall on October 23, 2023, which severely disrupted public peace and local activities.
Prosecuting officer ASP Olaide Rawlings established during the trial that Okusanya belonged to the Eiye Confraternity, while Gafar was affiliated with the Alora Confraternity, alongside other accomplices currently at large. Their actions violated several provisions of the Prohibition of Forcible Entry and Occupation of Landed Properties, Armed Robbery, Cultism, Kidnapping and Other Anti-Violent and Related Offences Law of Ogun State, 2016.
Finding the prosecution’s evidence credible and compelling beyond a reasonable doubt, Magistrate Oke delivered the sentence to serve as a strict deterrent against unlawful secret societies and violent disturbances in the state.
