Former Super Eagles Player, George Abbey, Unconvinced Of Nigeria’s Victory At AFCON 2023
Former Super Eagles Player, George Abbey, Unconvinced Of Nigeria’s Victory At AFCON 2023....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Port Harcourt-native and ex-professional footballer, George Abbey, has expressed doubts about the Super Eagles’ prospects of winning the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament. Abbey believes that the current squad is not sufficiently prepared to secure an additional AFCON title for Nigeria.
As the 34th edition of the tournament approaches, the Super Eagles, who have previously claimed AFCON titles in 1980, 1994, and 2013, aim to add another trophy to their collection. They’ve adopted the slogan “Let’s Do It Again” in their quest for victory in Ivory Coast.
Despite their rallying cry, George Abbey, who appeared in 18 matches for the Eagles and was part of the 2004 squad that clinched bronze in Tunisia, has observed that the current team has fallen short of expectations in recent matches, despite breaking a 15-game winless streak in friendly games.
Abbey, a former Crewe Alexandra defender, is of the opinion that the present Super Eagles squad lacks the strength and prowess needed to compete for the title in Ivory Coast, even with the inclusion of a prime Vincent Enyeama in goal.
Concerns have been raised about the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping performance after Francis Uzoho’s errors in recent friendlies against Saudi Arabia and Mozambique. These concerns have heightened as the AFCON tournament draws near.
“We are patriotic as a country, but we forget to check the present weather forecast,” remarked George Abbey, as quoted by The PUNCH. He added, “This current team is not as strong as our 2013 squad, and in my opinion, that team overachieved based on the competition they faced. Even if we magically produce a prime Vincent Enyeama and place him behind this team, I still wouldn’t bet on us winning the AFCON. I hope they prove me wrong, but I doubt they will.”
In the first round of the delayed 2023 AFCON, the Super Eagles of Nigeria have been drawn against the host nation, Ivory Coast, along with Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. The tournament is set to take place in January 2024.
