Breaking: Tribunal Rejects 712 Petitions While 179 Candidates Withdraw From Tribunal Battles....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Seven months after the 2023 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) disclosed that 712 cases from defeated candidates’ petitions have been dismissed.
Additionally, 179 candidates withdrew their petitions against opponents before election petition tribunals across the country. INEC clarified that out of 1,196 petitions related to the 2023 polls, 891 have been either dismissed or withdrawn, representing 74.4% of the cases. INEC emphasized that these figures confirm the credibility of the elections they conducted for various positions.
Contrary to reports in some media outlets, INEC rejected claims that 94.4% of all election disputes failed at the tribunals, explaining that the mere filing of petitions does not undermine the integrity of the recent elections.
INEC’s national commissioner, Sam Olumekun, stressed that filing petitions is an integral part of the democratic process, and a detailed analysis would reveal the true situation rather than portraying the elections as regressive based solely on litigation without empirical evidence.
Furthermore, the United Nations called for accountability in Nigeria’s election conduct and participation, seeking to learn from experiences in developed countries to help deepen democracy in developing nations like Nigeria.

Judgment Day Fast-Tracked! Court Grants Urgent Acceleration In Massive PDP-INEC Legal Battle!
The Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Salim Ibrahim, has ordered an accelerated hearing in a lawsuit brought by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT), led by Senator Adolphus Wabara, against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The litigation concerns the ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
-
Urgency of the Suit: Counsel for the plaintiffs, Chief Gordy Uche, SAN, requested an accelerated hearing because the case is time-bound. The request is driven by INEC’s revised schedule for the 2027 general elections, which includes a July ultimatum.
-
Plaintiffs’ Goal: The plaintiffs, including prominent PDP figures such as Prof. Jerry Gana and Olabode George, are seeking a court order to compel INEC to recognize the Kabir Turaki-led interim National Working Committee (NWC). They want INEC to update its official records and website to reflect this leadership, citing letters sent to the commission on May 4.
-
Basis of Claim: The plaintiffs argue that INEC is constitutionally obligated to uphold and enforce several subsisting court judgments, including decisions from the FCT High Court, the Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court delivered between January 2026 and April 2026.
Procedural Complications The proceedings were marked by significant legal maneuvering and internal party conflict:
-
Representation Disputes: Confusion arose when two different senior counsel announced representation for the PDP (the 8th plaintiff). Mr. Sunday Ameh, SAN, argued he had instructions to represent the party and filed a notice for change of counsel, while also moving to strike the PDP’s name from the suit on the grounds of unauthorized action.
-
Joinder Applications: Various parties sought to join the suit, including an application from the faction loyal to Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, which includes individuals seeking to be joined as defendants.
-
INEC’s Position: The commission’s counsel, Mr. O.A. Adeyemi, confirmed receipt of the summons but stated that INEC does not intend to take a side regarding who represents the PDP, leaving that issue to the court’s discretion.
Court Ruling
-
Adjournment: Justice Ibrahim adjourned the hearing until June 30 at noon to address the pending motions for joinder, the change of counsel, and the motion to strike out the PDP as a plaintiff.
-
Judicial Warning: The judge mandated that all processes be filed and responded to promptly, warning that the court would not tolerate any delays given the urgency of the matter.
