There is a growing expectation that Lionel Messi is on the cusp of clinching his record-breaking 8th Ballon d’Or, generating a spectrum of reactions on the internet ahead of the Ballon d’Or 2023 ceremony set to take place at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris on Monday, October 30.
The 36-year-old Argentine football maestro played a pivotal role in his home country’s victory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, enhancing his chances for the prestigious award.
The buzz surrounding Messi’s potential 8th Ballon d’Or comes in the wake of leaked information regarding the alleged winners of both the male and female Ballon d’Or awards for 2023.
In his illustrious career, Messi first secured the Ballon d’Or in 2009 while at Barcelona, followed by a remarkable three-year streak from 2010 to 2012. Cristiano Ronaldo then broke his dominance, triumphing in 2013 and 2014 during his Real Madrid tenure. Messi returned to claim the award in 2015, only to be succeeded by Ronaldo, who captured the title twice in 2016 and 2017 with Real Madrid. Messi reigned supreme again in 2019 at Barcelona and once more in 2021 with PSG.
In 2022, French football star Karim Benzema emerged as the victor. With the aforementioned trio now plying their trade outside Europe’s top leagues, Messi is still the frontrunner to secure this year’s Ballon d’Or, surpassing his peers.
Messi began his career at Barcelona and later moved to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) before signing a new contract with Inter Miami in July, where he has mesmerized the Major League Soccer (MLS) with his exceptional performances.
Although he narrowly missed out on the 2022 accolade, which went to Karim Benzema, recent reports suggest that Messi has been informed of his impending triumph at the upcoming Ballon d’Or ceremony.
Moreover, according to the Catalan newspaper Sport, Aitana Bonmati, a midfielder from Barcelona, is poised to receive the female award at the prestigious Chatelet Theater. Bonmati’s achievement includes leading Spain to victory in the Women’s World Cup, where they triumphed over England in an exciting final held in August.
Messi’s anticipated win will mark the first time in history that the Ballon d’Or is awarded to a non-European club player and will extend his lead over his long-standing rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, by three trophies.
In the race for the 2023 Ballon d’Or, Messi faced tough competition from Manchester City striker Erling Haaland and former PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe. Haaland achieved remarkable success last season, scoring 52 goals in 53 matches and securing the Treble with City. Meanwhile, Mbappe left a lasting mark by netting a memorable hat-trick in the World Cup final against Messi’s Argentina, despite a challenging campaign for PSG.
Although Messi is the most decorated footballer in history, he has consistently downplayed the significance of the Ballon d’Or. Shortly after joining Inter Miami, a club co-owned by David Beckham, the Argentine forward emphasized, “I have said it many times, the Ballon d’Or is very important due to the recognition at the individual level, but I never gave it importance.”

AEDC’s Position: In an August 26, 2026 announcement, AEDC stated that its available power dropped from about 641MW to 314MW due to transmission line trippings from the Shiroro Transmission Station starting August 25, leading to widespread load shedding across feeders, including Band A [cite: The dispute followed an AEDC public announcement dated August 26, 2026, in which the company said transmission constraints were affecting electricity supply to Abuja and parts of its franchise area., AEDC said the tripping of transmission lines supplying Abuja from the Shiroro Transmission Station since Tuesday, August 25, had “significantly reduced” the power available to it., According to the company, its allocation dropped from approximately 641 megawatts to 314 megawatts, substantially affecting its ability to supply electricity to customers., “As a result, load shedding is currently being implemented across several feeders, including Band A feeders, due to the reduced power available from the transmission network,” AEDC said.].
