Nigerians React As Lagos Private Hospital Shut Down For Allegedly Unsafe Blood Transfusions....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

A private hospital situated in Ago-Okota, Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area of Lagos State has been forcibly closed after allegations of collecting and transfusing unscreened and unlabelled blood to patients. The closure was executed by the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service (LSBTS) and the State Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA).

Dr. Bodunrin Osikomaiya, the Executive Secretary of the LSBTS, revealed that the health facility was sealed following a report from a concerned citizen. The hospital’s practices were deemed to be in violation of the blood transfusion service law, constituting unethical and unprofessional medical conduct that put the lives of unsuspecting citizens at risk.

She explained, “This facility was sealed for contravening the provision of the Blood Transfusion Service law, specifically, law 10, item 31 which states that no person within Lagos State shall transfuse blood into a patient unless such blood has been screened, tested, labeled by the state blood transfusion committee, and found to be negative for all transmissible diseases including HIV I and II, Hepatitis B and C, Syphilis and any other disease as may be deemed necessary by LSBTS.”

Osikomaiya also mentioned that the details of blood donors and transfusion recipients had been obtained from the facility’s management. The state maintains a zero-tolerance policy for the collection and transfusion of unsafe blood and blood products.

The LSBTS Executive Secretary added that individuals who received unscreened blood at the facility are being traced to determine their clinical health status and ensure their well-being.

In response to this incident, Osikomaiya affirmed that the hospital’s management and any implicated staff would face legal prosecution according to applicable laws. She urged citizens to actively support efforts against unscrupulous blood transfusion services by reporting any irregularities and unwholesome practices they encounter.

Additionally, Osikomaiya called on all stakeholders involved in the blood transfusion chain, including blood banks, blood donation centers, and logistics firms, to strictly adhere to WHO regulations and the Lagos State Blood Transfusion laws governing blood donation, collection, and transfusion.

Case Background and Prosecution

The convicts were apprehended following a violent cult clash at the Ikenne Town Hall on October 23, 2023, which severely disrupted public peace and local activities.

Prosecuting officer ASP Olaide Rawlings established during the trial that Okusanya belonged to the Eiye Confraternity, while Gafar was affiliated with the Alora Confraternity, alongside other accomplices currently at large. Their actions violated several provisions of the Prohibition of Forcible Entry and Occupation of Landed Properties, Armed Robbery, Cultism, Kidnapping and Other Anti-Violent and Related Offences Law of Ogun State, 2016.

Finding the prosecution’s evidence credible and compelling beyond a reasonable doubt, Magistrate Oke delivered the sentence to serve as a strict deterrent against unlawful secret societies and violent disturbances in the state.
