The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a response to recent controversy surrounding its flood alert, clarifying the circumstances surrounding the alert given during the October 7, 2023 Emergency Coordination Forum (EFC) meeting.
According to a statement from NEMA’s head of the press unit, Ezekiel Manzo, the agency believes that the available information at the time of the meeting was sufficient to inform Nigerians about the potential for flooding in certain states. The EFC meeting, called by NEMA’s director-general, Mustapha Ahmed, aimed to update critical stakeholders on the flood situation, particularly in the wake of the sudden release of water from the Lagdo Dam in the Republic of Cameroon.

The agency emphasized that the alert was necessary due to the impact of the water release on local government areas in Adamawa State and the subsequent establishment of camps to aid affected communities. NEMA also pointed out that relevant stakeholders, including the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), provided flood readings during the meeting, highlighting the levels of various rivers, such as the Benue and Niger.
NEMA urged state governments, communities, and stakeholders along the banks of these major rivers to remain vigilant and to activate response strategies when faced with an immediate flood threat. The agency further emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders and urged the public to contact NEMA headquarters or its regional offices for accurate information to avoid misinformation.
The statement concluded with NEMA’s call for constant vigilance, prompt information sharing, and swift action in response to flood threats.
