Reports indicate that Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani, a Qatari banker, has decided not to pursue the acquisition of the prestigious English Premier League club, Manchester United.
Earlier this year, Manchester United had publicly announced their exploration of various growth-enhancing options, including a potential complete sale. Sheikh Jassim and British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe had emerged as leading contenders following multiple rounds of bidding.
However, the process has recently hit a standstill, despite the dissatisfaction of supporters with the current owners, the Glazer family. In a report by the BBC on Saturday, it was revealed that Al Thani has withdrawn his interest in the acquisition of Manchester United.
The Glazers, who have held ownership of the club since a leveraged takeover in 2005, have amassed substantial debts totaling £970 million. They are reportedly holding out for a record-breaking fee exceeding £6 billion for the sale of the football club.
Sheikh Jassim’s bid aimed to secure full control of Manchester United and had pledged to alleviate the club’s debt burden. Conversely, Ratcliffe is reportedly considering the purchase of a smaller stake to help resolve the ownership deadlock.
During the Glazers’ tenure, the club’s on-field performance has also seen a decline. Manchester United has not clinched the Premier League title since the retirement of former manager Alex Ferguson in 2013, and their last Champions League victory dates back to 2008.
At present, Manchester United occupies the 10th position in the Premier League standings and has experienced defeats in their initial two group stage matches of the Champions League, a first in the club’s history.
