An individual armed with a knife carried out a fatal assault at a high school in northern France, where he had once been a student, critically injuring another teacher and a security guard. The incident, which is being probed for possible links to terrorism, unfolded amid rising global tensions stemming from the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
Anti-terrorism prosecutors in France have taken charge of the investigation into the attack at Arras’s Gambetta high school, located approximately 115 miles north of Paris. The suspect, who has been apprehended, is facing charges of terror-related murder and attempted murder.

According to national police, the suspected assailant is a Russian national of Chechen origin. French intelligence services revealed that he had been closely monitored since the summer, with surveillance and phone tracking. In fact, as recently as Thursday, he had been subjected to a police check that uncovered no wrongdoing.
Sliman Hamzi, one of the first officers to arrive at the scene, reported that the attacker, a former student at the school, yelled “Allahu akbar” (God is great) in Arabic.
Hamzi explained that another officer, passing by the high school, alerted him about the situation, stating that “someone is attacking with a knife.” Hamzi rushed to the scene and discovered a male victim on the ground outside the school, with the assailant in custody. Regrettably, despite the rapid response of his colleagues, the victim could not be saved.
Two additional individuals, a second teacher and a security guard, are in critical condition due to the attack.
School-related assaults are infrequent in France. President Emmanuel Macron, along with the interior and education ministers, headed to the scene, while the government called for heightened vigilance at all schools across the country.
Julie Duhamel, a representative from the Unsa teachers’ union in the Pas-de-Calais region, where Arras is located, noted that teachers had observed the suspect’s radicalization a few years ago.
In response to the attack, a large police presence was deployed around the school and surrounding areas, with heavily armed units, creating a substantial security perimeter. Pupils remained in lockdown within the school for over three hours following the incident.
This attack occurred three years after the beheading of a teacher outside a school in suburban Paris. Samuel Paty, a history and geography teacher, was killed on October 16, 2020, by an 18-year-old who had become radicalized. Similar to the suspect in Friday’s stabbings, that assailant had Chechen origins.
Martin Doussau, a philosophy teacher at Gambetta high school, reported that the attacker seemed to be searching for a history teacher. He recounted how he was pursued by the attacker, who asked if he taught history. Doussau managed to barricade himself behind a door until police used a stun gun to subdue the assailant.
This assault unfolded amid heightened tensions worldwide stemming from Hamas’ attack on southern Israel over the weekend and Israel’s military response, resulting in casualties on both sides. Calls for mass protests have emerged in Muslim nations after Friday prayers, condemning Israel’s intense bombing campaign in Gaza.
On Thursday, France’s Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, directed local authorities to prohibit all pro-Palestinian demonstrations due to an increase in antisemitic incidents following the Hamas attack.
France boasts the third-largest Jewish population globally, following Israel and the United States, as well as the largest Muslim population in Western Europe.
Naima Moutchou, a vice president of France’s National Assembly, expressed solidarity with the victims, their families, and the educational community, denouncing the killing of a teacher and the injury of several others.
