The National Examinations Council (NECO) has announced the results of the 2023 Internal Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE), revealing that a notable 61.60 percent of candidates achieved five credits or more, including English and Mathematics.
NECO further disclosed that during the examinations, 93 schools were implicated in whole-school (mass) cheating, and 52 supervisors were recommended for blacklisting due to inadequate supervision and aiding and abetting.
Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, made this announcement when releasing the examination results. He indicated that the affected schools would be summoned to the Council for discussions, following which appropriate sanctions would be imposed.
According to Wushishi, a total of 1,196,985 candidates participated in the examinations, comprising 616,398 males and 580,587 females. Additionally, 1,543 candidates with special needs took part in the examinations.
Wushishi provided further details, stating, “The number of candidates with Special Needs is 1,542, which includes 913 candidates with hearing impairment, 162 candidates with visual impairment, 103 candidates with Albinism, 61 candidates with Autism, 149 candidates with low vision, and 154 candidates with Adermatoglyphia, which are candidates with no fingerprints.”
He went on to say that 737,308 candidates, representing 61.60 percent, achieved five credits and above, while 1,013,611 candidates, constituting 84.68 percent, attained five credits regardless of whether English and Mathematics were included.

The apex court’s seven-member panel had previously restored Sections 77(5), 77(7), and 84(2) of the Electoral Act, reversing an earlier invalidation by the Court of Appeal. Reacting to the verdict, Adeyanju emphasized that under Section 287(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), INEC is legally bound to enforce decisions made by the Supreme Court without delay.
To give full effect to the judgment, Adeyanju urged the electoral body to immediately update its official portal by removing the names of candidates from political parties impacted by the ruling. He maintained that the commission must execute all necessary administrative steps promptly to ensure its official records accurately reflect the Supreme Court’s directives.

The directive was made public by the State Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, while briefing journalists in Umuahia following the state’s monthly Security Council meeting chaired by the governor. Flanked by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Navy Commander MacDonald Ubah (rtd.), the Commissioner noted that Governor Otti explicitly instructed security agencies to ensure a level playing field and grant express approval to any political party requesting venues for campaigns.
Commander Ubah praised the governor as a true democrat practicing politics without bitterness, explaining that parties are free to utilize stadiums and public facilities upon paying the standard fees.
