The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has once again expressed concern about the rising insecurity, violence, and clashes among political party supporters in the upcoming gubernatorial elections in three states of the federation.

The commission is also troubled by the failure of political parties to adhere to the regulations by uploading the list of their polling and collation agents onto the INEC portal, which is a crucial requirement for the elections.

In a statement signed by Sam Olumekun mni, the National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education, INEC warned that such actions by political parties and their supporters could undermine the smooth conduct of the elections.

Olumekun stated, “The Commission is concerned about the spate of insecurity and violence, including clashes among supporters of Political Parties and candidates in the forthcoming elections. In our engagement with Political Parties, the Commission has constantly called on parties to rein in their supporters from actions capable of jeopardizing the peaceful conduct of elections in Nigeria.”

He urged all political parties and candidates to avoid making statements or engaging in acts that could exacerbate the situation. INEC pledged to closely monitor the situation and maintain its engagement with security agencies and stakeholders to ensure peaceful elections in the three states.

Olumekun also revealed that, out of the total number of polling agents expected from the three states, political parties had only uploaded 55 percent of the figures as required. He added, “The Commission hereby wishes to further remind Political Parties that the portal will automatically shut down at 12:00 midnight on Tuesday 10th October 2023. There shall be no extension. Consequently, all parties sponsoring candidates for the elections that are yet to upload the list of their agents should do so before the deadline for the exercise.”

Regarding the online accreditation of journalists to cover the elections, he mentioned that only 45 media organizations had applied for accreditation out of the available slots. Olumekun emphasized the importance of timely accreditation and noted that there would be no provision for manual accreditation.
