Officials from the Nigeria Customs Service (NCoS) have intercepted a shipment of 1,600 drums of expired tomato concentrate concealed within 20 containers. This illicit cargo was discovered at the Port and Terminal Multi Services Limited (PTML) located in Lagos, and one individual has been apprehended in connection with the operation.

The Acting Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, revealed that the cargo in question is allegedly associated with a company known as Nikecristy Investment Limited. He conducted a tour of the seizure at PTML and explained the circumstances of the discovery.

“On the 8th of August, 2023, during a routine examination, our vigilant officers at PTML uncovered that each of the 20 containers, initially declared as containing almond shells, actually held a stock of expired tomato concentrate deemed unfit for human consumption,” he reported.

Adeniyi emphasized that these containers, imported from Spain, possess a duty-paid value (DPV) exceeding N116.2 million. The audacity of the smugglers in attempting to introduce this hazardous product into the Nigerian market has left authorities both shocked and dismayed.
