Reno Omokri, a former presidential aide, has penned an open letter addressed to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. The letter addresses the ongoing controversy surrounding the academic records of President Bola Tinubu from Chicago State University (CSU).

As a quick recap, Atiku is currently challenging Tinubu’s victory in the February 25th presidential election, raising allegations including certificate forgery, age discrepancies, and electoral malpractice against the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate.

In response to the ongoing disputes and with the Supreme Court judgment looming, Omokri, a well-known supporter of Atiku, took to social media to express his thoughts on the matter and the PDP, despite his recent defense of President Tinubu, his favored candidate in the election.

Omokri acknowledges that the 2023 election has concluded and Peter Obi of the Labour Party emerged as the victor, not Bola Tinubu. He argues that Peter Obi’s decision to run in the election, despite knowing he couldn’t win, diverted votes that would have naturally gone to the PDP, breaking a historical pattern where the Southeast consistently supported the party since 1999, with 2023 as the exception.

Omokri had advised Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar before the election that there wouldn’t be enough room for both of them to secure victory, but those concerns were not heeded.

He observes that the current situation within the PDP resembles the denial of election results seen in the Republican Party following the 2020 U.S. election. Pinning hopes on alleged discrepancies in Bola Tinubu’s Chicago State University records, which failed to materialize, appears to Omokri as a futile endeavor.

Omokri asserts that Chicago State University did not deny Tinubu’s credentials; rather, they stated that they couldn’t verify the diploma presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) because it was issued by a third-party vendor and certificates are more of a “Nigerian thing.” He points out that similar allegations were raised in 2022 and dismissed by an FCT Magistrate Court, raising doubts about the Supreme Court’s likelihood of considering the case.

Furthermore, Omokri questions the wisdom of trying to prove that Tinubu forged a diploma for a degree he legitimately earned, deeming it an act of desperation. He emphasizes that the PDP should not cling to this issue, which had been raised and failed two decades ago in 1999 and 2003.

Omokri also raises suspicions about the motives of those fueling this controversy, suggesting that they are mostly agents of Peter Obi aiming to use Atiku to undermine Tinubu and secure a rerun election, which Peter Obi believes he can win. However, Omokri doubts the feasibility of such a scenario.

In conclusion, Omokri suggests that the PDP’s path to redemption does not lie in Chicago but in facing reality and ensuring party unity in preparation for the 2027 elections.
