The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun 1 Command, located in Idiroko, Ogun State, disclosed on Friday that it successfully intercepted approximately five truckloads of foreign parboiled rice, cannabis sativa, and used tyres (commonly known as Tokunbo) with a total duty paid value of N242 million. These goods were allegedly smuggled into the country from neighboring Benin Republic.

At a press conference held in Abeokuta, the state capital, the Acting Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, revealed that these seizures were made at various locations, including Papa/Ajegunle, Ilaro Road, Imasayi/Joga Road, Ijebu Ode axis, and Odogbolu bushpath along Ijebu Ode Road, all within Ogun State.

The confiscated items comprise 1,436 used pneumatic tires, 53 sacks, 569 parcels of Cannabis Sativa, and 3,149 bags of foreign parboiled rice.

Adeniyi emphasized that these seizures underscore the NCS’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation from potential road accidents and harmful substances.

He further assured that the NCS will continue its efforts to intercept hazardous goods and contrabands as long as they are being smuggled into the country.

Adeniyi pointed out the dangers associated with foreign-used pneumatic tires, emphasizing that many of these tires have exceeded their recommended lifespan, posing significant risks to motorists.

Regarding the issue of Cannabis Sativa, he reiterated the NCS’s commitment to protect society from the entry of harmful substances, especially those that affect Nigerian youths.

Adeniyi pledged the NCS’s resolve to combat illicit trade, ensure road safety by curbing the use of dangerous tires, and protect Nigerian youths from the devastating effects of illicit drugs.

He concluded by affirming the NCS’s dedication to its mission of safeguarding the safety and well-being of all Nigerians.
