Senator Douye Diri, the Governor of Bayelsa State, has given his approval for the reinstatement of employees who were previously laid off from three state-owned tertiary institutions. The 704 individuals being reabsorbed were part of the workforce at the Niger Delta University, Amassoma (644), Isaac Jasper Adaka Boro College of Education, Sagbama (48), and the College of Health Technology, Otuogidi (12). Governor Diri announced his endorsement of the recommendations made by the committee tasked with reviewing the staff disengagement during a gathering at the Government House in Yenagoa.
These recommendations include rehiring the majority of the previously dismissed staff members in accordance with the institutions’ requirements, along with clearing their salary arrears and other entitlements.
The governor clarified that the reemployment of these individuals will commence in September, in line with the committee’s advice. He emphasized his administration’s commitment to the welfare of Bayelsans and assured that he would not politicize the well-being of the state’s citizens. Governor Diri expressed gratitude to both the committee members for their diligent work and the affected individuals for their patience throughout this process.
The Secretary to the State Government, Alabo Gideon Ekewei, speaking on behalf of the committee, highlighted that the re-engagement recommendations were made based on the specific needs of the affected institutions. He expressed appreciation to Governor Diri for allowing them to serve the state in this capacity and praised the committee members for their dedication and commitment.
Mr. Lucky Brambaifa, the Chairman of the Higher Institutions Joint Action Committee (HIJAC), expressed satisfaction that this protracted issue had finally been resolved. He lauded the governor for his focus on the welfare of state workers and for bringing relief to the reinstated staff members of the higher institutions.
