Kenneth Okonkwo, a prominent Nollywood actor and a key figure in the Labour Party (LP), has emphasized the importance of the judiciary exercising caution in its delivery of justice to prevent potential turmoil within the nation. Notably, two African nations, Niger Republic and Gabon, are still grappling with the consequences of military coups, and the return to democracy remains elusive in these countries. According to Kenneth Okonkwo, military coups often arise due to leaders clinging to power and election rigging. He stressed the imperative for Nigeria’s judiciary to uphold justice and fairness, thus averting any unconstitutional shifts in power within the country.
In his own words, he stated, “This marks a critical juncture in Africa’s democratic journey. Military coups are typically triggered by leaders who refuse to relinquish power and election manipulation. It is incumbent upon all of us to act responsibly and adhere to the rule of law to prevent any unlawful change of government in Nigeria. Wishing everyone a happy weekend, and may God bless us all.”
Furthermore, Kenneth Okonkwo emphasized that the declaration of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal’s verdict holds little significance unless the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) publicly shares the complete and unaltered results of the February 25 election. During an interview on Arise News, the LP leader criticized INEC, labeling it a “failed organization” incapable of complying with legal requirements. He pointed out that INEC was expected to provide election results from all polling stations, citing Section 62, Subsections 2 and 3 of the Electoral Act. Okonkwo also noted that INEC had failed to fulfill this obligation, as the election results had still not been properly disclosed months after the election.
