Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Adamu, has disclosed details of his conversation with President Bola Tinubu following his resignation from his position. Adamu, who assumed the role of APC Chairman in March 2022, stepped down amid internal turmoil within the ruling party. During his tenure, he distanced himself from the selection of key Senate and House of Representatives officials, initially dismissing reports of their appointments as mere rumors.
On July 4, 2023, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas officially announced the names of these principal officers during plenary sessions. In response to the crisis, President Tinubu, along with former party secretary Iyiola Omisore, held a meeting at Aso Rock, where Adamu characterized the issue as a family matter that had been resolved. Notably, Adamu resigned from his post while President Tinubu was away attending the African Union summit.
Following his resignation, former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje emerged as his successor. During an interview on a Trust TV program, Adamu expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of Tinubu’s election during his chairmanship, emphasizing that he harbored no regrets. He believed that only what was destined by God would come to pass and attributed Tinubu’s success in becoming the president of the country to divine will. Adamu also fondly recounted a conversation with Tinubu after his resignation, in which Tinubu humorously referred to himself as “this bouncing baby boy delivered by you,” which greatly pleased Adamu.
When questioned about the abrupt nature of his resignation, Adamu explained, “Politics involves a complex interplay of actions and reactions, and one must navigate through them. I believed that I had fulfilled my role in leadership. I have previously served as a minister in this nation, held the position of a governor, and served as the secretary of the Board of Trustees for a ruling party. Moreover, I had the privilege of leading the APC to triumph and ensuring the transition to a new government to succeed President Buhari.”
