In a ruling issued on Friday, Justice Simon Amobeda of the Federal High Court in Kano has ordered the state government to pay a compensation of N30 billion to the Incorporated Trustees of Massallacin Eid Shop Owners for the illegal demolition of their shops.
Justice Amobeda also granted a perpetual injunction preventing the state government and other defendants from entering or taking control of the Massallacin Eid ground until due process is followed.

“The Kano State Government and other respondents are hereby prohibited from transferring the land or title of the subject matter to any foreigner or indigene without following due process,” Justice Amobeda declared.
The judge characterized the demolition of the applicants’ shops by the state government as brutal and emphasized that the government failed to adhere to due process.
However, the Kano State government has contested the judgment, asserting that it was a miscarriage of justice. Barrister Haruna Isa Dederi, the state’s Commissioner for Justice, argued that the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case, as the state government was the sole owner of the land in accordance with the provisions of the Land Use Act.
