The DSS has praised its Director General, Alhaji Yusuf Magaji Bichi, for his initiative in expanding the organization and appointing Afunanya to lead the Directorate.

“Afunanya brings more than two decades of extensive experience in intelligence analysis, threat assessment, security administration, VIP protection, investigation, counterterrorism, open-source intelligence management, background checks, security vetting, surveillance, security sector governance, democratic accountability in law enforcement, educational research, peace advocacy, alternative dispute resolution, development communication, interagency cooperation, joint operations, teaching, public and media relations, reputation management, strategic communication, protocol and diplomatic affairs, writing, public speaking, stakeholder engagement, among others.”

Having earned a Ph.D. in Security and Strategic Studies in 2019 from Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Afunanya also holds a Master’s degree in Peace and Strategic Studies from the University of Ilorin, Kwara State (2011) and a Master of Arts degree in English Language from the University of Uyo (2009). He completed his undergraduate studies at Abia State University, Uturu, in 1997, graduating with Second Class Upper Division in English Language. Afunanya received several awards during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year, including the President’s NYSC National Honors Award for Outstanding Performance (1998/1999) Service Year and the Edo State NYSC Meritorious Honors Award (1998/99).

Since joining the DSS in 1999, Afunanya has undergone numerous leadership, management, executive intelligence management, preventing and countering violent extremism, and tradecraft training programs. He has also completed foreign training programs, including courses at Harvard University, City University in London, ARC London, and various programs in the USA and Switzerland.

Throughout his career, he has held several positions within the DSS, with his most recent role being Public Relations Officer. He has also served on the Board of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Sub Committee of the Presidential Transition Council. Currently, he is a member of the Strategic Communication Inter-Agency Policy and Coordination Committee (SC/IPCC) in the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

According to Nivo News, Commissioner of Police Danladi Isa provided the update on Friday during a briefing at his office, outlining the operational strategies and achievements of the Command during the period under review. He disclosed that 435 rounds of ammunition were recovered from suspected criminals and that over 200 suspects have been successfully prosecuted, with several jailed for various offenses.

The CP further revealed that 33 children who had been kidnapped or trafficked were rescued within and outside the state, with the suspects involved prosecuted and some already imprisoned. “We have sent a lot of people to jail. A clear message has been passed that it is no longer business as usual for criminals in Abia State,” Isa stated.

The arrests followed actionable intelligence received from Microsoft Corporation in the United States through the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which exposed the deployment of an advanced phishing toolkit known as RaccoonO365. The toolkit was designed to create counterfeit Microsoft login pages capable of harvesting user credentials and unlawfully accessing corporate, financial, and educational email platforms.

Briefing journalists in Abuja on Thursday, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed that the cybercrime centre launched a coordinated, intelligence-led operation in partnership with Microsoft, the FBI, and the United States Secret Service. He explained that investigations traced multiple cases of unauthorised Microsoft 365 account access recorded between January and September 2025 to phishing emails crafted to closely mimic legitimate Microsoft authentication portals.

According to police findings, the cyberattacks resulted in business email compromise, data breaches, and significant financial losses across several jurisdictions. Acting on precise intelligence, NPF–NCCC operatives conducted targeted operations in Lagos and Edo states, leading to the arrest of three suspects. Searches carried out at their residences yielded laptops, mobile phones, and other digital devices, which forensic analysis directly linked to the fraudulent activities.
