On Tuesday, the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, expressed deep concern about the deteriorating state of federal roads in Nigeria, sharing his experience of traveling from Abuja to Benin via the Lokoja road and witnessing the hardships endured by Nigerians due to road conditions.
Umahi had previously asserted that no existing federal road could endure beyond seven years, a conclusion he reached following his recent nationwide inspection of roads. He lamented the poor quality of work done by contractors over the years and criticized contractors for cutting corners in road construction materials.

Speaking to contractors from the six geo-political zones at the ministry headquarters in Abuja, Umahi stated, “There is no project being constructed right now in Nigeria that is going to last for seven years. The question is, are we going to be maintaining or reconstructing our roads every 10 years? That is what we have been doing.”
He recounted his arduous journey from Abuja to Benin City through Lokoja, where he witnessed extensive road construction projects but observed that many stretches of the road remained impassable due to potholes and degradation.
Umahi shared his travel experience, saying, “I spent 14 hours on the road, having started my journey at 10 am and arrived in Benin City at 2 pm the next day, and I was very saddened by the kind of suffering our people are enduring.”
