Chioma Egodi, a Facebook user, has been apprehended by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) following her review of an Erisco Foods product. On September 17, 2023, Egodi claimed in a Facebook post that she had tasted Nagiko Tomato Mix, a product from Erisco Foods Limited, and found it excessively sweet. Alongside her message, she shared a photo of the opened tomato paste.
Egodi had initially gone to purchase tomato paste for use in a sauce but could not find her preferred brands. Consequently, she opted for Nagiko, an Erisco tomato paste brand, asserting that it tasted overly sweet when she sampled it. However, she later deleted the post.

In her post, she wrote: “I went to buy Tin tomatoes yesterday that I will use to make stew. I didn’t see Gino and Sonia, so I decided to buy this one. When I opened it, I decided to taste it omo! Sugar is just too much! Haaa biko let me know if you have used this Tin tomato before because this is an ike gwuru situation.”
Erisco Foods Limited, the manufacturer of the product, refuted the claim, deeming it false and baseless. The company asserted that the post was misleading to its customers and appeared to be an attempt to tarnish the firm’s reputation.
Erisco further disclosed that the post seemed to be orchestrated with the intent of creating public discontent regarding its products. The company stated, “As previously instigated by some elements and syndicates who are uncomfortable with our increasing market dominance as a leading indigenous manufacturer of 100% natural tomato pastes.” As a result, Erisco decided to report the Facebook post to the relevant authorities.
