President Macron Bows To Pressure, Announcing Withdrawal From Niger....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced the withdrawal of France’s ambassador and troops from Niger following the July coup that ousted democratically-elected President Mohamed Bazoum.

In a televised interview on Sunday, Macron declared an end to military cooperation with Niger. He stated that the 1,500 French troops currently stationed in the country would gradually withdraw over “the months and weeks to come,” culminating in a complete withdrawal “by the end of the year.”

Macron explained, “France has decided to withdraw its ambassador. In the next hours, our ambassador and several diplomats will return to France.”

This decision by France comes after a period of mounting pressure from the military and public demonstrations in Niger. Numerous protests have taken place in the capital, Niamey, including outside a military base housing French soldiers.

Niger’s military junta, which had been demanding France’s departure due to Macron’s refusal to recognize the July 26 coup, welcomed Macron’s announcement. In a statement broadcast on national television, they celebrated it as a historic moment, emphasizing the determination and will of the Nigerien people.

This development follows similar requests for France’s troops to leave its former colonies, Mali and Burkina Faso.

Al Jazeera’s Nicolas Haque, reporting from Dakar, Senegal, described it as “a small victory for the government in transition, and perhaps an embarrassment for the French.”

Macron also reiterated France’s stance that Bazoum was being held as a “hostage” and remains the “sole legitimate authority” in Niger.

“He was targeted by this coup d’etat because he was carrying out courageous reforms and because there was a largely ethnic settling of scores and a lot of political cowardice,” Macron emphasized.

Ex-Senator Marafa Dumps ADC For NDC Three Weeks After Defection

Former Senator representing Zamfara Central, Kabiru Marafa, has left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Marafa, who served in the Senate between 2011 and 2019, was formally received in Abuja on Tuesday by top NDC leaders, including former Bayelsa State Governor and party figure Seriake Dickson, NDC Chairman Moses Cleopas, and National Women Leader Dudu Manuga. He arrived with a group of his supporters.

His defection comes just weeks after he joined the ADC on April 8, 2026, following his exit from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in August 2025, making it his second party switch within a short period.

Explaining his decision, Marafa cited concerns over ongoing legal disputes involving the ADC, as well as limited time before key electoral deadlines. He said the uncertainty created by court cases made it difficult to plan effectively for upcoming elections.

He noted that aspirants must align with a stable and legally secure political platform ahead of the close of party registration, warning that prolonged litigation could leave him and his supporters without a viable structure.

Marafa added that the decision was reached after careful consultations with his supporters and legal advisers, whose input influenced the final move to the NDC.

He also stated that he and his group would support the party’s eventual decision on its presidential candidate.

Welcoming him, Seriake Dickson described Marafa’s defection as a significant gain for the NDC, particularly in Zamfara State and the wider North-West, expressing confidence that his experience would strengthen the party’s presence and contribute to addressing insecurity in the region.

NDC Chairman Moses Cleopas said the party remains committed to inclusivity and is opening its platform to young people, women, and persons with disabilities as political activities intensify ahead of the next election cycle.
