Police Demote Officers Who Survived Armed Attack In Enugu

The decision by police authorities to demote three officers from the Nsukka Division, Enugu state, has sparked widespread outrage. These officers, namely Inspectors Ernest Ogbonna, Aboh Justin, and Kingsley Ugwuja, were on duty along the Nsukka-Ibagwa Ani Road in June when they came under attack by a group of over 10 heavily armed assailants in white Hilux and Siena vehicles.
In a courageous response, the officers engaged the criminals in a firefight that endured for nearly an hour. Despite the intensity of the confrontation, the officers managed to repel the attackers, with some of the assailants sustaining injuries in the process. Remarkably, there were no casualties among the officers, their weapons remained intact, and none of them suffered injuries.

However, following this heroic act, the officers faced a subsequent inquiry and orderly room trial. The outcome of this trial shocked many, as it led to the demotion of these brave officers, a decision that was upheld by the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) at Zone 13, Ukpo, Anambra state, responsible for overseeing police activities in Enugu and Anambra.
This development has sent shockwaves through the ranks of both police commands, where officers have frequently been targeted by criminals operating under the guise of unknown gunmen. Officers, speaking anonymously, expressed their disillusionment with the unjust punishment and questioned whether the authorities had expected these officers to perish heroically.
The concerned officers have appealed the decision and are now awaiting redress from the Inspector General of Police.
Rights activists have also weighed in on the matter, with the Alliance for Justice, a human rights group in Enugu, condemning the morale-dampening impact of the unjust orderly room trial. They called for urgent intervention by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to rectify this perceived injustice and to restore the officers’ morale, highlighting the officers’ resilience in the face of danger.
Efforts to obtain comments from police authorities, including the Police Public Relations Officer in Enugu, Daniel Ndukwe, and Force Public Relations Officer, CP Muyiwa Adejobi in Abuja, were unsuccessful, as messages and phone calls went unanswered.
In response to the situation, the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Dan Ndukwe, indicated that he would make efforts to verify the status of the trial but emphasized that the orderly trial was an internal administrative or disciplinary matter within the Nigerian Police Force. He further noted that officers aggrieved by the trial’s outcome have established channels through which to appeal such judgments.
