The Ondo State House of Assembly has rebuffed allegations of engaging in a witch-hunt as it pursues the impeachment process of the state’s Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

Oshati Olatunji, the chairman of the House Committee on Information, addressed these assertions during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, emphasizing that the Deputy Governor must address accusations of impropriety.

Olatunji asserted that their actions were not part of a conspiracy to oust the Deputy Governor, stating, “There are some allegations that border on emotions, and we don’t want to approach it emotionally. We believe that once we complete our investigations, we will be able to provide a clearer explanation. These allegations mainly involve misconduct.”

He clarified, “It is our responsibility to investigate when we receive a petition. We have consistently stated that we are not engaged in witch-hunting; we are merely fulfilling our duties, which involve conducting investigations. When we conclude our investigation, the world will see that we are not pursuing a witch-hunt but rather seeking to cleanse the system.”

Olatunji went on to mention that there were approximately five allegations of misappropriation and other misconduct contained in the petition against the Deputy Governor. He stressed that it was incumbent upon him to defend himself against these charges.

Regarding allegations of the Deputy Governor’s intention to divide the executive branch during the Governor’s absence and plot the impeachment of the Governor, Olatunji explained that these claims also needed clarification.

The impeachment process against the Deputy Governor by the House of Assembly commenced upon Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s return from an international medical trip. Some reports have suggested that the Governor is backing the Assembly’s efforts to remove Aiyedatiwa from office.
