The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has taken action to identify and suspend those who violated its fueling regulations in response to the uproar caused by the discovery of contaminated fuel in Max Air’s primary tank in July 2023.

The NCAA attributed this identification process to its collaborative efforts with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

Ibrahim Dambazau, the Director of Operations, Licensing & Training Standards at NCAA, spoke on behalf of NCAA Director-General, Musa Nuhu, during the inauguration of a joint audit committee on aviation fuel activities in Nigeria, held on Thursday.

The committee’s members include representatives from NMDPRA, NCAA, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), the Association of Aviation Marketers, and the Department of State Security (DSS).

This committee was established to investigate the supply and usage of aviation fuel, determine the cause of contamination, and propose solutions to prevent future occurrences of fuel contamination in the country.

NCAA has issued directives to airline operators and other stakeholders to strictly adhere to the fuel requirements set by the aviation industry’s regulatory body.

Regarding the contaminated fuel incident involving Max Air, NCAA acknowledged the public’s concerns and reassured both the Nigerian and global communities of the safety of Nigeria’s aviation industry and skies.

Dambazau stated, “I want to assure the Nigerian public and the world at large that the Nigerian aviation industry and our skies are safe as the NCAA has always been thorough in granting approvals in addition to our oversight responsibilities, which include surveillances and audits of all operators involved in the aviation industry to ensure the highest level of safety in our skies. The authority has not been sleeping and has taken steps in the aftermath of the incidents, which included the investigation of all the incidents that have been reported, collaboration with sister agencies in the aviation industry like FAAN, NSIB, NMDPRA that issue licenses, and DSS.”
