Lagos Assembly Urges Police Commissioner To Arrest Doctor In Missing Intestine Case....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The chairman of the Lagos Assembly’s ad-hoc committee tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Adebola Akin-Bright’s small intestine, Noheem Adams, has disclosed that the doctor who performed two surgeries on the boy is not a qualified surgeon.

In response to this revelation, Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, during a plenary session on Thursday, instructed the Clerk, Olalekan Onafeko, to write to the State Police Command for the arrest of Dr. Abayomi Baiyewu of Obitoks Hospital in the Alimosho area of Lagos.

Adebola tragically passed away on Tuesday shortly after the House had called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to provide further assistance to the patient in seeking treatment abroad.

While expressing gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu for his support during the boy’s treatment at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Obasa directed that a letter conveying the House’s condolences be sent to the family.

Obasa also tasked the committee with investigating other aspects, including inviting officials from the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), which has the legal responsibility to monitor private hospitals in the state. Additionally, he called for a review of existing laws to determine whether they should be amended, suggesting that private hospitals should be required to regularly report their activities to the government.

Announcing Adebola’s passing, Adams described the case as “heartbreaking.” He recounted that during the committee’s visit on Tuesday, the boy was still able to communicate with the lawmakers.

However, during the investigation, the committee learned from Dr. Baiyewu that he was not a qualified surgeon but relied on his experience as a medical doctor. Baiyewu admitted that he did not conduct a medical examination on the boy before the first surgery, which he performed himself. Instead, he relied on a report from the hospital where the patient was initially taken.

Noheem explained that after the first surgery, the boy continued to experience abdominal pain and was readmitted to Obitoks Hospital, where Baiyewu performed another surgery. As complications persisted, the boy was eventually taken to LASUTH, where it was confirmed that part of his intestine was missing.

Noheem revealed that Baiyewu failed to send the excised body part for testing in a pathological department, claiming it was mistakenly discarded. The doctor had also planned to perform a third surgery before the boy was transferred to LASUTH.

The House expressed its condolences to the grieving family, with Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda calling for the hospital’s closure.

Lawmaker Lawal Aina, another committee member, described the situation as heart-wrenching when they visited Adebola at the hospital. He revealed that upon further investigation, it was evident that Dr. Baiyewu was not a certified surgeon.

Several lawmakers recommended filing a formal complaint against Dr. Baiyewu with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, while others called for more stringent monitoring of medical doctors and hospitals.

“Wike: Fubara Joined APC Too Quickly But Failed To Consolidate Power – Rufai Oseni”.

Anchor of Arise Television’s Morning Show, Rufai Oseni, has criticised Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s political move to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying it failed to achieve the expected political consolidation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Oseni made the remarks on Thursday during the programme while reacting to Fubara’s withdrawal from the APC governorship primary.

He described the political situation in Rivers State as troubling for Nigeria’s democracy, arguing that it further highlights the influence of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in the state’s political structure since the 2023 elections.

According to him, Wike has become a dominant force in Rivers politics, with influence that appears to cut across party lines.

However, Oseni questioned how sustainable such political dominance could be, warning that excessive concentration of power in one individual could undermine democratic growth.

He said, “As regards Rivers, what do I say? It’s a shame on our democracy. Rivers has become two-factor authentication.”

He added that political alignments in the state appear heavily influenced by Wike, suggesting that recent developments reflect his continued control over key decisions.

“You quickly went to join the APC, you couldn’t get consolidation there,” he said, referring to Fubara’s political move.

Oseni further speculated on future political dynamics in the state, questioning whether Wike’s influence would extend to other political figures and structures.

He argued that Wike’s level of dominance raises concerns about political plurality, noting that democracy suffers when power becomes overly centralized.

According to him, while Wike’s influence is evident, the bigger question is whether such a system is sustainable in the long term.

Oseni also warned that similar political patterns could emerge in other states if not checked, stressing the need for stronger democratic institutions and balance of power.
