The Africa Film Academy (AFA), the organizers of the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), officially unveiled the nominees for the 2023 edition of the prestigious film awards during a press conference in Lagos. Raymond Anyiam-Osigwe, Chairman of the AFA, presented the program details for the 19th edition of the AMAA ceremony.

Keith Shiri, the head of the AMAA jury, also made an appearance at the event, emphasizing the significance of this year’s awards and its role in redefining continental recognition, as the 20th edition is scheduled for 2024.
The 19th AMAA ceremony is set to take place on October 29 at the Balmoral Hall, Sheraton Hotels in Ikeja, offering a platform to honor outstanding achievements in African cinema.
Shiri, represented by jury member Steve Ayorinde, revealed the nominees across 26 categories. He emphasized the rigorous process undertaken by the jury to select the nominees for each category.
Among the nominees for this year’s awards are notable Nigerian films such as “Gangs of Lagos,” “Anikulapo,” “The Trade,” “Mami Wata,” “Obara’m,” and “Bashoru Gaa.” The Jubril Malaifia Award for Best Animation category includes nominees like “Lost” from Uganda, “Azania Rises” from South Africa, “Jabari” from Ghana, and “Bashoru Gaa” from Nigeria.
The Award for Best Film in an African Language category features contenders such as “Pusha Pressa Phanda” from South Africa, “Anikulapo” from Nigeria, “The Kitera Chronicle” from Uganda, “Four Walls” from South Africa, and “Mami Wata” from Nigeria.

Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush also made the squad following an impressive season, while 18-year-old Barcelona U19 striker Hamza Abdelkarim earned a surprise call-up despite not yet making a senior international appearance. Nantes striker Mostafa Mohamed was among the notable omissions.
Egypt will reduce the squad to the FIFA-required 26 players after their friendly against Russia in Cairo on May 28, before facing Brazil in another warm-up match on June 6 in Cleveland.
The Pharaohs have been drawn in Group G, where they will begin their campaign against Belgium on June 15, followed by matches against New Zealand and Iran.
The squad also includes goalkeepers Mohamed El Shenawy and Mostafa Shobeir, along with experienced midfielders Mahmoud Trezeguet and Emam Ashour, as Egypt prepare for the expanded 48-team World Cup across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
