Justice Augie Calls For Supreme Court Reform After Recounting 12 Burnt Goats Case
Justice Augie Calls For Supreme Court Reform After Recounting 12 Burnt Goats Case....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Justice Amina Augie, who recently retired from the Supreme Court bench upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70, has called for urgent amendments to the 1999 Constitution to improve the efficiency of the Nigerian judicial system. She expressed concern over the overwhelming caseload faced by the Supreme Court, which sometimes includes trivial cases, such as one instance involving the burning of 12 goats, where the State itself filed an appeal.
Justice Augie emphasized the need for the National Assembly to limit the types of appeals that can be brought to the apex court and to focus on matters that align with the Court’s role as a policy-making institution. She stressed that the Supreme Court’s primary function should be to shape society’s social order through policy directives or amendments.
In her retirement remarks, Justice Augie voiced her confidence in Senate President Godswill Akpabio, a former student of hers, to initiate the constitutional amendment process. She urged the National Assembly to undertake the necessary constitutional amendments to free the Supreme Court and its Justices from excessive caseloads, enabling them to fulfill their mandate of upholding the rule of law, justice, and democracy.
The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, praised Justice Augie for her exceptional contributions to the legal profession and judiciary, describing her as an accomplished judicial colossus. The Attorney-General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, expressed the government’s commitment to appointing more judicial officers to the Supreme Court bench and improving the welfare of judicial officers. He also pledged support for critical reforms to enhance access to justice and expedite trials.
President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, highlighted the heavy workload faced by the Supreme Court in Nigeria compared to other countries’ supreme courts. He called for improved remuneration for judicial officers and emphasized the need for urgent government action.
Justice Augie’s valedictory ceremony was delayed until after the annual court vacation, despite her reaching the age of 70 on September 3rd.
