Benue’s Pensioners Owed 120 Months In Arrears....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Pensioners in Benue State, both from the state government and local governments, have received payments for a period of four and three months, respectively, since the commencement of Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration. These payments covered the months from May to August 2023 for state pensioners, while local government pensioners received payments from June to August 2023.

The State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Michael Vember, revealed this during a conversation. He pointed out that the government’s payment approach has left local government pensioners with an accumulated backlog of approximately 77 months, accrued during successive administrations, while state pensioners have an accumulated backlog of about 43 months.

Vember explained that the current administration decided to initiate a fresh payment system and intends to address all the backlog when sufficient funds become available. He expressed concern over the challenging situation faced by pensioners, particularly due to the economic downturn resulting from the removal of petrol subsidy during President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He highlighted the dire circumstances faced by retirees receiving pensions as low as N4,000 monthly.

Initially, Governor Hyacinth Alia’s focus was on paying state pensioners, excluding local government pensioners. However, upon drawing his attention to this discrepancy, he began making payments to local government retirees as well. So far, the governor has disbursed payments up to August 2023. Nevertheless, he has created arrears in between, as payments for local government pensioners had ceased in May 2018 and resumed from June 2023, resulting in a backlog of arrears from May 2018 to May 2023. The same pattern was followed for state pensioners, with arrears dating back to May 2020.

Governor Alia has promised to settle these arrears but has not specified a timeline for payment. This calculation has been made, and the funds are being held pending availability for disbursement. The economic situation in the country, coupled with the substantial wage disparity between civil servants and pensioners, has placed a significant burden on retirees. Vember emphasized the distressing conditions pensioners are facing, underscoring the need for better support and recognition of their contributions to the nation.

Maidoki announced his departure in a resignation letter dated May 14, 2026, addressed to the APC chairman of Rafin Zuru Ward in Zuru Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

In the letter, the lawmaker said his decision was driven by the persistent crisis rocking the party, which he noted had become a major threat to his political future and personal ambition.

“This is to inform you, the chairman of APC Rafin Zuru Ward, that I have withdrawn my membership card as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC),” he stated.

“My decision is based on the serious and continuous crisis in your party, which has made my political aspiration and ambition a source of concern.”

Maidoki’s exit comes just ahead of the APC primary elections scheduled as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.

In a related development, two notable APC aspirants in Kebbi State, former Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah and Sani M. Kabiru, have also withdrawn from the party’s senatorial primaries set for May 18, 2026.

Na’Allah, who previously represented Kebbi South Senatorial District, communicated his withdrawal in a letter to the APC State Chairman in Birnin Kebbi.

The former senator said his decision was based on what he described as credible information regarding the party’s disposition ahead of the primary, alleging that directives from powerful quarters had already shaped the process.

Similarly, Sani M. Kabiru, popularly known as Kabiru Sani Giant, stepped down from the APC senatorial primary race for Kebbi Central Senatorial District.

In his withdrawal letter, Kabiru cited personal, political, and strategic reasons for his decision.
