In a campaign launch event held on Thursday, Athan Achonu, the gubernatorial candidate representing the Labour Party in Imo, pledged his unwavering commitment to addressing the issue of insecurity in the state if elected. Speaking at the Chioma Ajunwa Sports Complex in Nguru, Mbaise LGA, Mr. Achonu decried the unacceptable level of insecurity in Imo and vowed to put an end to the violence and bloodshed plaguing the region.
Insecurity has transformed Imo into a land marred by violence and destruction,” Achonu emphasized, adding that “my top priority upon assuming office in January 2024 will be to halt the daily suffering of the defenseless people of Imo and restore peace, security, and tranquility.
Achonu also highlighted his track record of providing scholarships to numerous Imo students, generating employment opportunities for hundreds, and investing in agro-industries, which have become one of the largest in the South-East region. He firmly addressed the allegations against him, attributing them to fear of his impressive accomplishments and resolved to reclaim the state from the grip of misgovernance.
In addition to his security agenda, Achonu promised to boost Imo’s industrialization efforts by establishing two industrial parks in each zone, including a pharmaceutical park in the Orlu zone. He further committed to granting full financial and administrative autonomy to local government councils if elected.
The Labour Party chair in Imo, Callistus Ihejiagwa, explained that the selection of Aboh Mbaise for the campaign launch was intentional, serving as a show of solidarity with former Governor Emeka Ihedioha and the Mbaise community. Ihejiagwa emphasized that the people of Mbaise had been denied a well-deserved and popular victory in 2019, and the campaign’s starting point aimed to convey the LP’s commitment to addressing their grievances when elected in November.
