On Wednesday, Sudan’s army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, embarked on his fifth international trip since late August in a bid to gain recognition and legitimacy amid a power struggle with his former deputy. General Burhan, who has effectively been in charge of Sudan since leading a coup in 2021, is set to engage in discussions with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, focusing on “enhancing bilateral relations,” as stated by the Sudanese leader’s office.
Previously confined to army headquarters in Khartoum due to the conflict between his loyalists and paramilitary Rapid Military Support Forces (RSF) led by his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, General Burhan has relocated to Port Sudan along the Red Sea coast. His recent diplomatic visits to Egypt, South Sudan, Qatar, and Eritrea are seen as efforts to bolster his credentials in anticipation of potential negotiations to end the ongoing conflict.
The conflict, which has already claimed nearly 7,500 lives, according to estimates from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project, showed no signs of abating, especially in critical areas like Khartoum and the Darfur region. Witnesses reported civilian casualties resulting from airstrikes on two markets in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state. General Burhan’s regular army is the only party in the conflict with an air force.
On Tuesday, RSF fighters shelled North Khartoum, resulting in the deaths of at least 17 civilians, according to witnesses. The war has displaced over five million people, including one million who have sought refuge across international borders, according to United Nations data.
