This event is organized by the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU) in partnership with the West and Central African Research Education Network (WACREN) and other collaborators.
Represented by the Director of University Education in the ministry, Rakiya Ilyasu, the minister emphasized the ministry’s commitment to promoting the role of science through collaborative knowledge-sharing efforts. He acknowledged that higher education is meant to produce a skilled workforce for the country’s development, but the education sector faces numerous challenges.
The minister lamented the challenges faced by the higher education sub-sector, including insufficient funding, corruption, inadequate infrastructure, a shortage of academic staff, labor strikes, brain drain, limited research, weak governance, and security issues, among others.
He stressed the need for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s higher education landscape to bring its universities and other tertiary institutions up to par with global standards, highlighting President Bola Tinubu’s awareness of these challenges and his commitment to addressing them. The president has increased the education budget to 25 percent and is implementing the necessary policies to effect change.
Yakubu Ochefu, the Secretary-General of CVCNU, also emphasized the importance of exploring innovative approaches for Nigeria’s scientific future, while Omo Oaiya, the Chief Strategy Officer of WACREN, noted that the symposium would greatly benefit the Nigerian academic community by enhancing the visibility of research in the education sector.
