The Federal Government has initiated the establishment of an interministerial committee dedicated to poverty alleviation, composed of representatives from the Federal Ministries of Humanitarian Affairs, Interior, and Finance. Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, disclosed this during a meeting with her counterpart, Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in Abuja on the previous day.
Dr. Edu stressed that collaborative efforts between ministries would significantly contribute to addressing the underlying causes of the humanitarian crisis and poverty in Nigeria. She also highlighted that her ministry would closely cooperate with the Ministry of Interior, particularly in areas related to internal security, human trafficking, and migration, as these issues are among the drivers of humanitarian crises in the country.
“We are here with a strong commitment to fulfilling our responsibilities, and to succeed, the President has emphasized the importance of teamwork and the need for inter-sectoral and ministerial collaboration to achieve our goals,” Dr. Edu remarked.
“My new responsibilities center on reaching a larger population of vulnerable Nigerians, providing them with humanitarian services, and alleviating poverty in line with President Tinubu’s agenda. The President is dedicated to bringing smiles back to the faces of Nigerians and reducing the number of people living below the poverty line to the minimum possible extent,” she added.
Dr. Edu affirmed that the government remains committed to ending the suffering of Nigerians affected by humanitarian crises and poverty.
