John Enoh, Nigeria’s Minister of Sports, has encouraged the Super Eagles to secure victory in the upcoming 2023 AFCON tournament set to kick off in Ivory Coast in January 2024.
The Sports Minister expressed this sentiment following the Super Eagles’ commanding 6-0 victory over Sao Tome and Principe in their final 2023 AFCON qualification match held in Uyo on Sunday, September 10.
During the match, Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Ademola Lookman all contributed with goals, propelling the Nigerian team to victory over São Tomé, reminiscent of their previous 10-0 win against the same opponent.
The Super Eagles had already secured their spot in the 2023 AFCON with one match to spare, thanks to a 3-2 victory over Sierra Leone in June. They concluded their qualification campaign at the top of Group A with an impressive 15 points from six games, having scored 22 goals while conceding just four.
Following the final qualification match on Sunday, the Sports Minister expressed his delight with the team’s performance and called on them to clinch the 2023 AFCON title.
He stated, “On behalf of all Nigerians, I extend my congratulations to the Super Eagles for bringing pride to our country with such a remarkable performance. As we gracefully conclude our qualification, I implore the team to go above and beyond in Ivory Coast next year. We desire to see the AFCON trophy return to Nigeria, and we are fully committed to making this a reality.
“The ministry will put in continuous effort to ensure the team receives the best possible preparation as we strive to bring glory to Nigeria. Our players have demonstrated unwavering dedication to the national colors, and I hope this renewed sense of patriotism continues to motivate the team at the AFCON.”
The last time the Super Eagles claimed the AFCON title was in 2013, marking their third victory in the history of the competition.

Taking over leadership at the JAMB headquarters in Bwari, Abuja, Aina succeeds Professor Ishaq Oloyede, whose 10-year, two-term tenure concluded on July 31, 2026. Initially approved by President Bola Tinubu on May 21 when Aina was 39, this appointment marks him as the youngest individual ever to lead the examination body.
When the appointment was first announced, Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, highlighted Aina’s deep background in digital infrastructure, public-sector reforms, and national examination systems, noting his historic milestone as one of Nigeria’s youngest computer engineering professors.
In his inaugural address, Aina acknowledged the foundation laid by his predecessor—who is widely credited with modernizing the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)—and vowed to expand on those achievements. Emphasizing a strong stance against malpractice, he warned wrongdoers that their illicit activities have no place at JAMB, promising to ramp up modern technological investments and deepen partnerships with security agencies to safeguard the integrity of the admissions process.
