The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has introduced a mobile application designed to facilitate the reporting of power outages and disruptions by citizens across the nation.
During the app’s launch in Abuja on Monday, Sanusi Garba, the Chairperson of NERC, emphasized that this initiative aligns with the commission’s commitment to enhance service delivery for customers. Garba stated, “We recently launched consumer protection regulations that stipulate timeframes for public utilities, especially distribution companies (DisCos), to address customer complaints. This newly launched app is intended to aid the commission in monitoring DisCos’ compliance with the standards set in those regulations.”

Garba revealed that the app initially aimed to assess the quality of power supply but was later adapted to gather live data for more effective monitoring of DisCos.
He encouraged Nigerians to use the app to file complaints, assuring them of swift responses that would boost their confidence in both the commission and the DisCos. Garba also mentioned plans for a nationwide rollout of the app to all distribution companies.
Christopher Ezeafulukwe, the Chairperson of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), commended the collaboration that led to the app’s development. He stressed that customer feedback is invaluable for distribution companies, as it informs the services they provide. Ezeafulukwe emphasized that the app represents a win-win scenario for all stakeholders involved.
Aisha Mahmud, NERC Commissioner of Consumer Affairs, explained the app’s functionality and its partnership with DisCos. She highlighted that it collects data on hours of supply to customers in different service bands to protect users. Mahmud detailed that the app employs a multi-channel approach, allowing customers to report outages via a web app or a mobile app available on Apple and Google stores. Customers input their meter numbers and submit complaints, triggering automatic confirmations and resolution timelines to the respective DisCos.
Mahmud added, “As soon as they confirm that, the app will send that confirmation to the DisCo with a resolution timeline, and as soon as the DisCo resolves this complaint, then the DisCo will update the app saying ‘we’ve resolved this complaint,’ and the app will automatically send another confirmation request to those customers on that particular feeder.”
