The message of support was delivered on Wednesday by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who urged the Nigerian team to approach the encounter with confidence, unity and a deep sense of national pride. He commended the players for their impressive displays so far in the tournament, noting their discipline, courage and strong belief on the pitch.

Idris reminded the Super Eagles that Nigeria’s past successes at the AFCON were built on teamwork, resilience and an unyielding fighting spirit, qualities he said the current squad has clearly demonstrated throughout the competition. He told the players that they carry more than the national colours, stressing that the hopes and expectations of millions of Nigerians rest on their shoulders.

The minister encouraged the team to remain focused and united, urging them to trust one another and give their all from the opening whistle to the final minute. He expressed confidence in the squad’s quality and ability to go all the way, saying they have earned their place among the last four and possess what it takes to reach the final and lift the trophy.

Danagogo, through his legal representatives, notified the police that he was currently out of town and would be unable to appear for the scheduled interview fixed for Thursday, January 15, 2026. The invitation was issued by the Intelligence Response Team of the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja.

The police invitation followed the emergence of a leaked telephone conversation allegedly involving Danagogo and a Port Harcourt-based cleric, Tombari Joseph Gbeneol. In the reported exchange, both individuals were accused of discussing plans to bring in assassins from Israel to target the FCT Minister, an allegation that has since generated widespread political and legal debate.

In a formal letter dated Wednesday and addressed to the Commissioner of Police overseeing the IRT, Danagogo’s law firm, Danagogo, Oputa & Associates, requested that the interview be rescheduled. The letter, signed by Sir I.O. Nwodoh, Esq., explained that their client was not within reach at the time the invitation was served and therefore could not meet the proposed date.

The legal team appealed to the police for understanding and proposed that the interview be moved to Monday, January 26, 2026, to enable their client honour the request at a later date.

According to Nivo News, the Osun State Government has faulted the state Police Command over what it described as an unprofessional and unlawful approach to recent arrests carried out in the state. The state government expressed worry over the Police’s handling of public communication on the matter, noting that an initial statement released by the command was later withdrawn and replaced with a revised version, a development it described as contradictory and misleading.

The controversy revolves around the arrest of Apesin Abiodun Adegoke and Iyiola Monsuru. While the Police claimed the arrests were based on a petition allegedly written by Bola Oyebamiji, the government dismissed this claim as inaccurate. Official records, according to the government, show that the petition was authored by Arimiyau Owoade, the APC Chairman of Irewole Local Government Area, over statements said to have affected the party’s candidate in the area.

The government further disputed the Police’s description of the arrests as mere “invitations,” insisting that both individuals were taken into custody without any formal invitation. It was stated that Adegoke was arrested on January 7 at his mechanic workshop, which the Police later referred to as his hideout.

Claims by the Police that Adegoke admitted to the offence or pleaded for leniency were also rejected by the government, which challenged the security agency to provide evidence to support such assertions. The state noted that Adegoke remained in detention until late on January 12, contrary to Police claims that he had been arraigned on January 9.

The government added that an application for administrative bail was submitted by Adegoke’s legal counsel on January 8 but was ignored by the Police until a follow-up reminder was issued, after which bail was eventually granted.

Citing provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act and the Police Act, the state government emphasized that suspects in non-capital offences should not be detained for more than 24 hours without arraignment and should be granted administrative bail where court appearance is not immediately possible.

Describing the six-day detention as an abuse of authority, the Osun State Government urged the Police Command to uphold professionalism, respect the rule of law, and refrain from actions that could suggest political interference.
