The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has disclosed the formation of a temporary committee tasked with conducting a comprehensive evaluation of firearms licensing and regulations within the Nigeria Police Force, in accordance with the Firearms Act and existing legislation. This initiative is driven by the imperative of public safety and national security.
In an official statement, the Police spokesperson, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, conveyed that the committee’s primary responsibility will be to conduct a meticulous assessment of the existing procedures and regulations governing firearms licensing, with the ultimate goal of augmenting their efficiency, transparency, and accountability.

Furthermore, he emphasized that the Police will actively engage with pertinent stakeholders, such as legal experts, civil society organizations, and specialists in the field, to ensure a comprehensive and well-informed review process.
In alignment with his unwavering commitment to addressing various forms of insecurity in the nation, the IGP has issued a stern warning to individuals involved in the unlawful possession of firearms and light weapons. He reiterated that the illicit proliferation of such arms represents a significant threat to the peace and stability of the country.
The statement went on to emphasize, “In light of this, the Nigeria Police Force is resolutely determined to combat the illegal fabrication, sales, possession, and use of arms, emphasizing that possessing firearms without the appropriate licenses and permits is not only a violation of the law but also a grave danger to society.”
The Nigeria Police Force is steadfast in its resolve to pursue and prosecute individuals engaged in these unlawful activities to the fullest extent of the law.
The Inspector General of Police has directed all State Commissioners of Police, supervising Assistant Inspectors-General of Police overseeing Zonal Commands, and tactical squads to initiate a comprehensive crackdown on the illegal manufacture, sale, possession, and utilization of prohibited firearms throughout the country.
He has also urged all Nigerians to promptly report any suspicious activities related to firearms to their local police divisions or through various NPF social media platforms for immediate response.
