Former Vice Chancellor Sentenced to 35 Years In Prison For N260m Fraud.

Professor Magaji Garba, former Vice Chancellor of Federal University Gusau, was found guilty of a five-count charge of obtaining money by false pretence and forgery by the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Garki, Abuja, presided over by Justice Maryam Hassan Aliyu, and sentenced to 35 years in prison.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, or EFCC, obtained the conviction on Thursday.

 

Garba was charged by the EFCC on October 12, 2021, for allegedly extorting various sums from a contractor under the guise of awarding him a N3 billion contract for the University’s perimeter wall fencing.
In his decision today, the trial judge stated that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
He found the defendant “guilty” on all five counts and sentenced him to seven years in prison without the option of a fine on counts 1-3 and seven years in prison with the option of a N10 million fine on counts 4 and 5.

The arrests followed actionable intelligence received from Microsoft Corporation in the United States through the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which exposed the deployment of an advanced phishing toolkit known as RaccoonO365. The toolkit was designed to create counterfeit Microsoft login pages capable of harvesting user credentials and unlawfully accessing corporate, financial, and educational email platforms.
